125th Anniversary

When you’ve been in business for 125 years, you celebrate anniversaries in grand style. First National Bank of Giddings celebrated its 125th anniversary at a public event, downtown at its Motor Bank parking lot.

HISTORY - Both Giddings and the First National Bank have played a key role in the development and growth of rural and suburban Texas. Giddings took its name from local businessman, Dewitt C. Giddings, who named the city in honor of his brother, who was killed at the Battle of San Jacinto. Giddings was formally founded in 1871 upon the arrival of the Houston and Texas Central Railway on land granted to Stephen F. Austin in 1821. The town site was developed by William Marsh Rice and Rice Institute (now Rice University,) and many of the early settlers were of German and Wendish heritage. Giddings became the county seat when Lee County was established in 1874, and the First National Bank was established here when the population reached approximately 1,200.

GETTING STARTED - Established in 1890, First National Bank of Giddings is the oldest and only bank in domiciled Giddings and Lee County, and has been serving its constituents for over seven generations. After all of these years, only a handful of banks in Texas own a Charter pre-dating 1890. Of the nearly 500 banks now chartered in Texas, the First National Bank of Giddings lays claim as the 23rd oldest bank in Texas.

FNB has occupied the same real estate at the corner of Highway 290 and Highway 77 since its beginning, and over the years has been rebuilt, remodeled, and redecorated several times. After a series of early bank
presidents, Monroe Hannes assumed the position in 1942. “Mr. Monroe” served until his death in 1978, and his long standing legacy continues to influence us today. Current Board Members are:

Jimmie Luecke, Chairman of the Board,
Everard Droemer, Randy Stewart, Fred Hannes,
Bill Landiss, Billy Morgan, Wayne Galipp.

MODERN BANK, FAMILY FEEL - With no out of town branches and related distractions, Bank staffers concentrate their activities in the Giddings area community and can be found participating in virtually every community and civic project and organization. First National Bank offers a full array of financial products ranging from the traditional accounts and products, to the most up-to-date electronic products, such as mobile and internet banking and remote deposit. The bank’s lending team offers consumer, commercial, farm, ranch and home loans with terms designed to meet the needs of our local market. We are locally owned and offer “live faces and live voices” to assist our customers. “Our employees are simply the best,” emphasized President Landiss. “We try to make it fun to come to work, and we have people that truly enjoy their jobs and the opportunity to provide that one-on-one personal service.” With 39 employees and nearly $200 million in total assets, First National Bank is proud of its hometown feel and heritage.

Since 1890, First National Bank of Giddings has been a strong presence in the town of Giddings and surrounding communities.  Over the years, our employees have devoted countless hours to leadership roles in church, community, education, youth, and civic volunteer organizations.  In addition, First National Bank of Giddings has given thousands of dollars in contributions throughout our area which directly benefit our community and we are dedicated to ‘giving back’ to our area.

Our FNB Family believes that taking a lead role in improving the quality of life for the communities and customers that we serve is simply a part of who we are and is certainly a part of what we want to do.  We believe in it.
